The Ethiopian Orthodox Church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and like the Coptic and Syriac Orthodox Churches, as well as the Armenian Apostolic Church, it professes miaphysite Christology, does not recognize the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon (451), and accepts only the first three Ecumenical Councils.

The flourishing of the Ethiopian school of icon painting falls during the period of mature and late Middle Ages. The preservation and development of the traditions of national art continue among contemporary artists.
